Individual Coaching
Individual coaching sessions are the most effective way to learn meditation and other mind training practices. The IMT model draws on elements of the therapeutic relationship in western psychotherapy as well as a Tibetan Buddhist understanding of a student-teacher relationship.
Individual sessions are effective because they are personalized. The most widely available meditation programs in the west take a one-size-fits-all approach. This approach is limited, and many students quickly plateau in their progress. Without the help of a coach or teacher, it is difficult to see where you are getting stuck. A relational style of teaching meditation takes into account an individual's unique disposition, strengths, and weaknesses, and tailors’ instruction to each individual.
Although mindfulness practice is valuable, it is only a very small part of a much larger system of mind-training. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, there is an enormous variety of meditation practices, all with different goals and outcomes. Individual coaching sessions draw on a variety of meditation practices as well as western therapeutic practices.
Individual clients will determine their goals in the first several sessions. These often include addressing burnout and stress, increasing concentration, overcoming mental blocks, developing more self-awareness, developing positive emotions and character strengths, clarifying one’s life meaning, tuning into intuition and the body’s felt sense, leadership development, improving communication, and developing a meditation/spiritual practice.
It is suggested to start IMT with one session per week. Overtime, sessions can be reduced to regular check-ins if desired.
